The a16z podcast did an interview with Neal Stephenson recently where he talked extensively about Lamina1 and metaverse about a month ago: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a16z-podcast/id8428187...

I'm a big fan of his fictional work. I think his track record in startups has not been that great though. Even though he has clearly got some interesting ideas and thoughts. So, I don't have super high hopes that this time is going to be different.

But I think that if you can look beyond the current crypto scandals there might be a need for something like what he is trying to build here. I'm not convinced that what he's building is the right thing technically. But the base observation that copyright, ownership of digital assets, and payments become a lot more complicated in whatever the metaverse is going to be is fundamentally not wrong. It's where our current systems break down.

Novels like Snow Crash, the Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, and his more recent Reamde and "Fall, or Dodge in heaven", all feature some kind of crypto payment systems and it's a recurring theme in his work. Even his baroque cycle is basically an historical science fiction novel that is about the birth of the modern financial system in the seventeenth century. So, he is an author that has a track record of understanding a thing or two about money.

You just nailed it. That it is the virtue signaling politics of San Francisco. The policymakers in California are only interested in exploiting politics to posture for purposes of self-esteem, branding, status and tribalism.

It reminds me of Marc Andreesen who penned the article "IT’S TIME TO BUILD" while living in the most anti-building neighborhood in the whole Bay area, full of billionaire's called Atherton.

This may be today's least original comment, but I've recently discovered the magic combination of podcast and treadmill. (I knew them both, separately, for a long time already.)

In addition to helping make 30 minutes of sweating go by much faster, I find it almost always generates a bunch of ideas. Like a little brainstorming walk, if you will, but all-weather and easier to schedule.

My current favorite podcast for this is the Andreessen Horowitz "a16z podcast."

I'm half way through the book and found it quite good if you are interested in strategy, private equity because it talks about relatively recent events. There's also a recent a16z podcast with Dell, Martin Casado and Andreessen that I enjoyed https://future.a16z.com/podcasts/cloud-wars-company-wars-pla...

Eugene Wei on the az16 podcast speaks about TikTok’s use of music in a social media experience. Of course, this is an extension of the capabilities of the iPhone to consume media, and also create and share it. Stunning.

Atherton is one of the most anti-building places in the world and is populated by billionaire folk like Marc Andreessen who decry how anti-building many parts of the US has become.
