    Be obsessed or be average

    Grant Cardone · 2016

We're in the middle of an epidemic of average. So-called "normal" people get up every day, go to work, do what's asked of them, leave promptly at 5, and return home to sit on the couch and watch TV. Society tells us that this is what it means to lead a balanced life. Don't stress too much or work too hard. Your career isn't everything. But Grant Cardone thinks this preoccupation with balance has really just given an excuse to be mediocre.

    What Hacker News says

I second this recommendation. I'm a big fan of Grant's material. Some of it blurs the line between actual, technical "sales advice" and a more generic sort of almost "self help" kind of thing, but I have found it valuable in either case.

In addition to Sell or Be Sold and The 10x Rule, I'd also suggest Be Obsessed or Be Average.

The books which I have read which have had a profound impact on how I think and improve what I do are:

      1. Drive: The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us - Daniel H. Pink

      2. Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance - Angela Duckworth

      3. The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck - Mark Manson

      4. Be Obsessed or Be Average - Grant Cardone

      5. High Performance Habits - Brendon Burchard

      6. The Obesity Code - Jason Fung

The summary of what I've taken out of this is really fall in love with the intrinsic reward of doing things, take on the challenge but work at it pragmatically and patiently. It's okay to be a little crazed at what you want, do it for you, and always reflect, learn, adapt and try again.

Have you read Grant's other books? So far I've read Sell or Be Sold, The 10x Rule, If You're Not First, You're Last and Be Obsessed or be Average. I've found all of them to be pretty good. Not necessarily life changing, but solid, with a good mix of motivational message and some actionable ideas. Enough so that I'll probably go back through and read a couple of those again and actually take notes this time through.

      Some thoughts:

Everything will take longer than you expect. Nobody will answer your emails or return your phone calls. If somebody, by amazing chance, does reply, it will be weeks later than you expected.

The code you thought you could finish in a month? It'll take 4 months. And you still won't be satisfied with it then. And you should be so lucky as to have written something anybody will actually pay money for.

As Grant Cardone says, companies die from lack of attention. Nobody can buy your product or service if they've never heard of it. You have to find (a) way(s) to get people's attention. Jump and and down and scream and yell at the top of your lungs. You have to figure out the marketing / promotion / sales stuff to succeed. Don't believe "if you build it they will come." You have to work far harder than you might expect, just to get on someone's radar so they will even consider buying your thing.

OTOH, the good news is, you don't have to worry about competition from other startups. Startups don't die from competition from other startups. They die because they build something nobody wants, or they can't figure out how to get attention in the market.

Read The Four Steps To The Epiphany by Steve Blank. Read The 10x Rule and Be Obsessed or Be Average by Grant Cardone. Read The Discipline of Market Leaders.

The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot when I was in my late teens. I had never heard about Buddhism before or anything like the ideas he presented.

Grant Cardone's Be Obsessed or Be Average last week.

Finally, but mostly, Maurice Nicoll's Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of P.D. Ouspensky and G.I. Gurdjieff, though I recommend reading what is widely considered the "introductory" text, "In Search of the Miraculous" by P.D. Ouspensky.
