    HTML & CSS

    Jon Duckett · 2011

Every day, more and more people want to learn some HTML and CSS. Joining the professional web designers and programmers are new audiences who need to know a little bit of code at work (update a content management system or e-commerce store) and those who want to make their personal blogs more attractive. Many books teaching HTML and CSS are dry and only written for those who want to become programmers, which is why this book takes an entirely new approach. • Introduces HTML and CSS in a way that makes them accessible to everyone--hobbyists, students, and professionals--and it's full-color throughout • Utilizes information graphics and lifestyle photography to explain the topics in a simple way that is engaging • Boasts a unique structure that allows you to progress through the chapters from beginning to end or just dip into topics of particular interest at your leisure This educational book is one that you will enjoy picking up, reading, then referring back to. It will make you wish other technical topics were presented in such a simple, attractive and engaging way!

A textbook which gives a good introduction to Web Development is:

      1) Fundamentals of Web Development (Randy Connolly and Ricardo Hoar).

I have the 2nd Ed but the 3rd Ed is out and is more contemporary.

Specific books for HTML and CSS are:

      1) HTML and CSS - The Comprehensive Guide (decent contemporary introduction)

      2) CSS in Depth

      3) CSS The Definite Guide - 5th Ed - Reference

      Specific books for JavaScript.

      1) Javascript - The Comprehensive Guide (decent contemporary introduction)

      2) Eloquent JavaScript - 3rd Ed

      3) Javascipt - The Definite Guide - 7th Ed

I learned the basics of HTML and CSS from 'HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites' by Jon Duckett, that was enough knowledge for me to build websites with it and look up the rest on MDN as I go. I learned JavaScript from 'JavaScript: The Good Parts' by Douglas Crackford, and figured out the new ES6 changes in a day by reading a few articles online (I already had previous programming experience so learning JS wasn't too hard). I learned Sass, Bootstrap, BEM, etc. mostly by reading the official documentation. And lastly I learned React and Redux from the most popular course on React & Redux at Udemy. I also created a GitHub and committed code there everyday, I made a personal website and hosted it on GitHub Pages and I made two small 'proof-of-concept' React app, so that I had something to show to my potential employers. That was enough for me to land a junior front end job.

I understand that's only the path I've taken and there are multiple ways to get there. Good luck.

Personally, the best resources that were invaluable to me were the Jon Duckett books called...

JavaScript and jQuery: Interactive Front-End Web Development

      http://javascriptbook.com/

      and..

HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites

      http://www.htmlandcssbook.com/

The Javascript one gives a really solid foundation for learning Javascript from the ground up and front-end web development in general. Also there are practical examples of many things the beginner/average developer usually is tasked with building and doing.

There is also the companion book that he did a couple years earlier on HTML and CSS.

They are pretty much both the first things that show up on Amazon when you search for Javascript and jQuery as well as HTML and CSS, and best sellers in their respective category.

In terms of what you should start with, I'd recommend basic front-end development, but browser extensions are good too.

      Hope that helps!

That kind of self-reflection is something I'm struggling with right now.

I'll start doing things, forget I accomplished them, realize I'm halfway into the month and then panic profusely when I don't remember what exactly I've done.

For example, starting this January I have been working on my front-end and design skills, since I feel weak in that area. I looked for relevant books, got through several ("Design of everyday things", "About Face", "HTML&CSS" by Jon Duckett, and finishing up "CSS Secrets" by Lea Verou), created some very neat things in pure CSS, and I'm getting better at it by the day.

Objectively speaking, I've gotten through a lot of things in the last 3 weeks, but it doesn't feel that way. My intuition tells me, quite unhealthily, that I got nothing done. I think the list of accomplishments I'm keeping is the only thing that keeps me sane against the overzealous (and scatterbrained) project manager that lives in my head.

      I worries me a bit.
