    JavaScript and jQuery

    Jon Duckett · 2014

This is not your average programming book. We understand that all kinds of people build websites these days (and that they don’t all have a degree in computer science). So, if you want to use JavaScript to make your web pages more interactive, interesting, and usable, we can help. Even if you have never done any programming.

"JavaScript and JQuery: Interactive Front-End Web Development" by Jon Duckett takes a visual approach, making it easier to understand.

Just looking through my read category on my kindle and realised I haven't read any life changing books in 2014.

Currently reading Javascript and Jquery by Jon Duckett and find his visual style and clear, concise writing perfectly fits how I learn. Could not recommend it enough to any other programming learners.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich by Ramit Sethi is a very simple, straightforward book on personal finance. He advocates having your money automatically distributed into fixed costs, investments and spending money rather than getting bogged down in budgets.

An Army at Dawn by Rick Atkinson is the first in a trilogy that chronicles America's entrance into World War II in North Africa, all the way to the downfall of the Third Reich. His style is both minutely researched and totally readable. He nails the violence and horror at the front, as well as the incredible scale and logistics of the whole enterprise. I'm now on the second in the trilogy, The Day of Battle.

Last year Thinking Fast and Slow and Antifragile were my highlights - they compliment each other well and both changed my outlook on how the world is organised and how I perceive it.

Thanks to all the other posters, I've added lots of the suggested books to my kindle.

My dad asked what to get our 13 year old as a birthday present. So I asked him, and he said Jon Duckett’s JavaScript and JQuery book - which he realises is a bit dated by now (2014), but he wanted it anyway (in part because he already has the other two books in the series), so that’s what he’s got.

And sometimes a “dated” book is still valuable. One night recently I was having trouble getting him to go to sleep because he was getting overstimulated by Bob DuCharme’s The Operating System Handbook (1994) - which is valuable in getting into his head that there exist systems which are very different from his beloved Linux (it covers MVS, VM/CMS, OpenVMS, and OS/400) [0]

For years I’ve been buying him books and watching him fail to actually read them-I’m pleased at 13 that’s finally changed

[0] I have the hardcover edition which I bought in the 90s, but now you can get a free PDF from the author: https://www.snee.com/bob/opsys/part1intro.pdf

Some advice here as a self taught web developer noob. This has been my journey in a nutshell so I hope it is helpful.

      1. HTML / CSS (1-2 Months) as already mentioned here, the Responsive Web Design course on the https://www.freecodecamp.org/ is really good. https://netninja.dev/ also has some really good free content on youtube. Don't rush this step. Make some cool static websites and share with your friends. Learn git and become a Github Pro member so you can serve private repo's on the web for free (via github pages).

      2. Javascript (3-6 Months) I highly recommend "Javascript & Jquery" by Jon Duckett. In the web development world it is by no means the latest book but I do believe learning how javascript was used 10 years ago relevant to how javascript became what it is today. I'd be happy to give you my copy! Spend the time learning javascript, make something cool and share it with your friends. Get to a stage where you can think about how you could make something in javascript. If you're dreaming in Javascript then you've taken this step too far.

      3. Backend (Eternity) At this point it really depends which way you want to go as a developer. Do you prefer Python as a language? Look into Django. Are you a DHH fan boy? Ruby on Rails. Are you too scared to take on another language (like me) then use expressJs. I highly recommend reading Hypermedia Systems https://hypermedia.systems/ to give you a high level background and understanding how a web 1.0 style application is built.

      Enjoy!!
