Teaching strategies and teachers/tutors have an effect on student confidence, motivation, self-efficacy, attitudes, and performance. The first link (teaching math in the context of engineering) increases the confidence of female students (along with many other benefits): [LINK] Peer instruction narrows the gender gap [LINK] Inquiry based learning in math helps female students [LINK] and so on confidence (and related concepts like self-efficacy and sense of belonging) can be taught directly or positively influenced indirectly. See for example interventions that teach 'growth mindset' in math: [LINK] This video explains growth mindset the best: this video And Jo Boaler has written a great deal on how growth mindset can improve girls' performance in math classes: [LINK]

It's called "growth mindset" (vs. fixed mindset). There are books and hundreds of articles on it. I've found this TED talk the best explanation of growth vs. fixed mindset: this video

As a manager I saw what people can do when you believe in them... So I honestly can't believe anymore that someone isn't talented enough! A growth mindset, having a plan, real effort and of-course some luck/support, are things that I believe in. I suggest this thought-provoking TEDx talk: this video

I think you missed the word "also" in my comment: "See also work on 'growth mindset' vs. 'fixed mindset'" That's all I said about growth mindset in my comment. For a good explanation of growth mindset, I usually show faculty and college students this video as a start: this video
