Drummer Larnell Lewis hears Metallica's Enter Sandman for the first time on Drumeo and learns to play it by ear, using his musical vocabulary.

Cited as an inspiring example of quickly picking up a new piece by ear and of expertise transferring across genres.

    1. @efortisMay 2021· in “Ask HN: Ways to train your mind to be faster at picking up concepts”

I'm not a drummer but my most inspiring example of picking up concepts is this video [1] of Larnell Lewis playing "Enter Sandman" by ear for the first time. Note how his vocabulary helps him learn the form of the song and its nuances. Software-development speaking, I feel you, I'm also slow at reading requirements. But I'm slower if I start with over-generalized use cases, rather than going through concrete scenarios. [1] this video

Not the same song, but I really, really love this and it is Metallica: this video Larnell Lewis Hears "Enter Sandman" For The First Time (and plays the drum part)

For some reason HN stripped off the time argument from the URL, making this post make much less sense. The relevant time is 15:52. this video
