A DIY demonstration of a fan-and-screen mosquito trap that uses carbonated water as a CO2 attractant. The creator reports catching about 8,000 mosquitoes in two nights.
HN commenters point people to it as a cheap, simple, effective way to kill mosquitoes, and some report trying it successfully.

The comments saying that other sources of water need to be removed are spot on. Another technique I've tried which works (observably) well is described in this video: this video tl;dw: Get a big drum fan with a screen on the back, attached with small/powerful magnets. Mosquitos are such poor flyers that they get pulled against the screen and can't escape, and they pretty quickly desiccate and die. Most other flying insects don't get caught, although there is a bit of collateral (some moths and lacewings, unfortunately). Another benefit of the fan is that you can hang out in front of it and mosquitos mostly won't bother you there either. I did this in our shared backyard space in Brooklyn and would catch hundreds/thousands of mosquitos per week. Despite that, there were still a ton of mosquitos in the area so it's best combined with other methods of control. edit: better/updated video link
There are some YouTube videos out there where guys attach a screen (or net) to a high powered fan and catch/kill insane amount of mosquitoes. this video
There's a lot of tricks out there for killing mosquitoes but the window screen on a fan one is a personal favorite: this video
Do it! I've seen videos floating around E.g. [0] that are as simple as a giant fan that sucks in mosquitoes. [0]: this video
Ya I saw this Dan Rojas video linked on HN a while back when the laser mosquito idea came up. He uses an open bottle of carbonated water to attract them to the fan/screen trap this video
