Practical File System Design with the Be File System

    Dominic Giampaolo · 1999

This new guide to the design and implementation of file systems in general - and the Be File System (BFS) in particularcovers all topics related to file systems, going into considerable depth where traditional operating systems books often stop. Advanced topics such as journaling, attributes, indexing, and query processing are covered in detail.

I have been cooped up for this long winter and probably need to get out, but I have been having a lot of thoughts about file systems and the future of storing data.

This leads me to ask (since I haven't experimented with file system design since 2006?) where are there file system design resources in 2024?

(I am aware of the classic "Practical File System Design with the Be File System by Dominic Giampaolo)

Edit: I also feel like some of my thoughts have been coming after the recent update from Hans Reiser.)

Not entirely related, but recently I began re-reading Practical File System Design with the Be File System by Dominic Giampaolo. Not exactly an up-to-date text, but a good guide to the tradeoffs involved in designing a file system.

For a great introduction to file systems, I highly recommend Practical File System Design with the Be File System by Dominic Giampaolo, creator of the Be File System who ended up moving to Apple and designed Spotlight, the file indexing and search system that was introduced in Mac OS X Tiger. It's very well written and you'll learn a lot. When I was hired in 2006 as a summer undergraduate research intern at an academic storage systems lab, I used this book to study up on file systems design and implementation. At the time I haven't even taken an operating systems class (I had just completed my freshman year), though I already knew a lot about operating systems by reading a lot of papers and books on Unix as well as writing C programs that used POSIX system calls. This book helped me a lot on my very first research project: exploring the use of SQLite as the basis of a non-hierarchical file system. That was a fun project that helped start my research career.

I still refer to this book from time to time to brush up on file system basics.

These are both somewhat dated but still very worth while and relevant reads, you can find them cheap on Amazon:

Dominic Giampaolo wrote "Practical File System Design with the Be File System" which he has made freely available at: http://www.nobius.org/~dbg/practical-file-system-design.pdf

I found it to be well written and interesting when I was a university student first going deep on the subject.

The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System (2nd Edition) by McKusick is also well written and covers some of the same ground.
