No they aren't, provided that the developers actually bother to read books like "Filthy Rich Clients".

Plus there are frameworks like JGoodies and everyone should look at Filthy Rich Clients book.

The biggest issue with Swing is just bad defaults. Except for NeWS, Sun wasn't really into the desktop business.

Swing is only an horror show for those that don't bother to read books like "Filthy Rich Clients", or don't want to spend money on a proper design team.

Why do I mention? Because until now .NET Core still doesn't have anything like Swing across all supported platforms.

MAUI might do it (Xamarin renamed), or you might just get Blazor running on WebWidgets.

I rather have Swing if the alternative is running Blazor that way.

Not counting community toolkits here, just what is available out of the box.

That is what happens when one stays with AWT, does everything on the main thread, and doesn't bother to read Java UI design books like Filthy Rich Clients, or integrate component libraries like JGoddies.

However I do agree Visual Basic and Delphi were much better, and if Java hadn't happened we wouldn't have lost 20 years playing around with VMs and dynamic languages, to finally start paying attention to AOT, value types on type safe languages.

Not only IntelliJ, "Filthy Rich Clients" (http://filthyrichclients.org/) is a must read for anyone that cares about doing proper UIs in Swing.

And being aware of component libraries like JGoodies (http://www.jgoodies.com/).

Not only it is a breeze, after reading books like "Filthy Rich Clients", I have full control over hardware acceleration instead of playing CSS tricks with Z ordering in the vain hope that the browser will do the right thing.

Lack of design skills doesn't improve just because one changes UI stack.
