      Three reference textbooks are available openly:

      * Introduction to Information Retrieval, http://informationretrieval.org/

      * Information Retrieval in Practice, http://www.search-engines-book.com/

      * Entity-Oriented Search, https://eos-book.org/

      Modern Information Retrieval is also a classic reference. Not openly available but some contents are (were?) available online. Their site seems to be down but the Internet Archive has a copy.

      For the record, the Google exec (Berthier Ribeiro-Neto) is the co-author of "Modern Information Retrieval" [1], an excellent book and close to a standard text on IR.

      Looks like a great introduction. My copy of Modern Information Retrieval (1999) is starting to show its age as well and from glancing through the table of contents, as pointed out in Greg's post, this really seems to hit a lot of the recent trends in IR. Up to chapter 11 is kind of a review of traditional IR and then from chapter 11 on it has a pretty impressive chunk of IR from the last decade (which is often what's missing in introductory texts). Added to my Amazon wishlist. :-)

      I actually used this as a supplement to Modern Information Retrieval (http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Information-Retrieval-Concepts-...) for my IR class this semester. I found the Stanford book to be much more detailed in terms of the mathematical formalities behind the models/concepts and ended up preferring it.
