Programming in C, Third Edition is a revised edition of a classic programming title. Author Stephen Kochan's style and thorough explanations have earned him a place among the most respected of computer book authors. Although the C programming language hasn't undergone any major changes, it's enjoying new life among game programmers and small device programmers, where its simple elegance makes it the ideal choice for small fast programs. Large game developers, such as Nintendo, use C almost exclusively. This edition combines the time-tested instructional style of Stephen Kochan with updated and relevant examples.
* C Programming Absolute Beginner's Guide by Perry and Miller
* C Programming A Modern Approach by King
* Programming in C by Kochan
* C Primer Plus by Prata
* Head First C by Griffiths & Griffiths
* 21st Century C by Klemens
* Understanding and Using C Pointers by Reese
* Expert C Programming - Deep C Secrets by van der Linden
The exercises in K&R are superb though and I highly recommend taking the time to do them all while you read K&R which I still feel you should, it is a small book so shouldn't take long to read.
However the exercises in K&R are excellent so make sure you do them all. Actually the cost of K&R is justified just for the exercises IMHO.
Also get Understanding and Using C Pointers by Richard Reese, it is a must have.
Two other books I very much enjoyed are Head First C and 21st Century C (2nd edition). Head First has some nice "extra" bits like threads and networking in C. 21st Century C explains sensible, modern ways to do things in C and, more importantly, things you should NEVER do in C!
Edit: Most resources on the Internet are too confusing for beginners. As a matter of fact, people who know C are usually unable to teach C to novices. Good introductory resources for C are rare - which corresponds to C's elitist nimbus.
It's how I finally added some structure to my learning adventure.
