Crucially, pages 129 and 130 are blank, leaving a big chunk of the conclusion in limbo. Then, an hour later, they are back, like magic. 12th August 2014, 22.30 BST
Arthur Schopenhauer - The World as Will and Representation.
Surprisingly readable and insightful, even if you don't buy his metaphysics. Einstein had Schopenhauer's portrait on his wall and considered him a genius.
* Poetry
John Milton - Paradise Lost
Powerful and beautiful writing.
* Fiction
Rabelais - Gargantua and Pantagruel. Funny and a real feast of words (the translation is a work of art in itself)
Thomas Mann - The Magic Mountain. Haunting and moving
Pierre Choderlos de Laclos - Dangerous Liaisons. Scandalous, gripping.
Ivan Turgenev - First Love. A masterclass in writing. Short, sensitive and exquisitely told.
Marcel Proust - In Search of Lost Time. Exceptionally rich and a beautiful study of love. Reading it is like living another life.
PG Wodehouse - the Jeeves series. Hilarious, perfectly frivolous, light and sunny
* Non-fiction
Stuart Russell - Human Compatible: AI and the Problem of Control. Potential bad outcomes from AI and what we might be able to do about them

Karl Popper - The Open Society and its Enemies. How to work against totalitarianism
Research: George Friedman, Peter Zeihan, John Mearsheimer, Peter Hitchens, Noam Chomsky (more of an ideologue), etc. on this issue. You can start on YouTube OR read their books, I guess.
Media like the "Zeitgeist, the Movie" make me and many others upset. It doesn't follow logic, it is quite simplistic, it is just too lame. It ties very different things into a great conspiracy theory.
What really pisses me off is all is welcomed by the far right conservatives in the western democracies. Anybody against their plans gets dismissed as a lunatic paranoid.
In "What We Say Goes" Noam Chomsky mentions the case of government agencies feeding the media with small bits of John F. Kennedy's assassination.
