I do hope the No Kings protests can grow into a movement beyond Trump because he is just a symptom of a larger issue and the real “kings” are not elected officials, those people are just their servants. Virtue Hoarders by Catherine Liu is a great book on this topic.

Catherine Liu's short book Virtue Hoarders has this thesis, arguing that the class that this language is a marker of is the professional managerial class (PMC), a social class originally posited by the John and Barbara Ehrenreich in the 70s. I can't recommend the book too highly but I think it was correct in most of its observations.

Chris Hedges recently interviewed Catherine Liu, the author of Virtue Hoarders: The Case against the Professional Managerial Class. They are a mostly invisible spectrum of plutocratic aristocracy who essentially replaced the middle class and gained immense wealth, power, and sense of entitlement.

This. It isn't (positive) leadership. It reminds me of a book Chris Hedges whose author was recently interviewed.[0,1] The worker bees vs. the managers. ICs including tech SWEs/PEs/SEs/EEs at Meta can become managers and a part of this problem, they haven't necessarily drank the Zuck Kool-Aid. Actually, only some (not all) of the senior IC6+ who might become managers are in this camp and not all managers (maybe 5-10%) espouse these beliefs. I'm kinda glad really that I got the ax on the 2nd round in 2023. (I was WFH semi remote. It's funny they tried to interview/rehire me in similar roles, but only for MPK or similar major hubs.)
