    What Hacker News says

I love game theory, but I hate that the focus outside of academia is almost always on simplistic single period games. These games can result in some interesting conclusions and teach some valuable concepts, but they are terrible at representing how people behave in the real world.

Anyone interested in a more complex and realistic examination of the economics of pirating should consider Peter Leeson's book, The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates.

I would also recommend Leeson's Anarchy Unbound: Why Self-Governance Works Better Than You Think for some interesting applications of game theory in more realistic historical contexts.

You might like the book Anarchy Unbound: Why Self-Governance Works Better Than You Think. The entire book is dedicated to analyzing historic examples of Super Hard Mode for governance, and how solutions can emerge that reduce violence and other undesirables without what we would recognize as a government or state.

It's a pretty accessible pop-econ book with a compelling premise and a good amount of historical examples and citations.

Replace "anarchy" with "self-organization" or "decentralized governance" to make it sound a lot less scary. I've just started a pop econ book on this topic (after watching the author's video) that seems interesting so far.
