    Brain Rules for Baby

    John Medina · 2010

What’s the single most important thing you can do during pregnancy? What does watching TV do to a child’s brain? What’s the best way to handle temper tantrums? Scientists know. In his New York Times bestseller Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina showed us how our brains really work—and why we ought to redesign our workplaces and schools. Now, in Brain Rules for Baby, he shares what the latest science says about how to raise smart and happy children from zero to five. This book is destined to revolutionize parenting. Just one of the surprises: The best way to get your children into the college of their choice? Teach them impulse control. Brain Rules for Baby bridges the gap between what scientists know and what parents practice. Through fascinating and funny stories, Medina, a developmental molecular biologist and dad, unravels how a child’s brain develops – and what you can do to optimize it. You will view your children—and how to raise them—in a whole new light. You’ll learn: Where nature ends and nurture begins Why men should do more household chores What you do when emotions run hot affects how your baby turns out, because babies need to feel safe above all TV is harmful for children under 2 Your child’s ability to relate to others predicts her future math performance Smart and happy are inseparable.

There can be a temptation as a parent to practice our hobby in a way that makes us feel that we are engaging with our child when actually our child would be just fine with FlightRadar and more of daddy.

I'm not judging (really) because every family has different circumstances and every person is different, I just know that I jumped into this trap a few times and you are reminding me of myself back then.

Brain Rules for Baby is an excellent way to learn how your child works, or at least I found to be so.

Anyway, you're nearly at Brio and then Lego and it gets better and better...

Sitting with my newborn sleeping on my chest currently. I’ve really enjoyed Brain Rules for Baby and currently reading Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child. Both good, feel like the latter is going to be a pivotal part of our parenting. My wife really enjoyed The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read.

Your life will be destroyed and you will become a slave to a helpless human. There is a significant chance that your relationship with the mother will be end within a few years.

You can build a new life with your partner and the helpless human but it will be very hard work, especially if your child arrives with health issues.

Existing parents don't talk about all of this to those who are not yet parents. It's a big, secret, suffering club.

Hopefully it'll all be worth it for you because you already bought membership of the club!

P.S. Read Brain Rules For Baby. I bought it based on a recommendation on HN a few years ago. It explains the early years using science. I recommend it to everyone.
