Grain Brain is an interesting read that covers in a pop-sci way some of the various research being done.

Pardon the editorial (I realize it's not very HN) but this type of fear mongering fluff does the public more harm than good.

The point being epigenetic is real. It does the general public more harm than good to perpetuate the myth that they (via lifestyle, diet, etc.) have no say in their genetic destiny.

No doubt sometimes some of these genes really matter. But often they are dormant notes of what might be if you don't take care of yourself.

p.s. I just finished reading "Grain Brain." Regardless of what you think about gluten, he makes very strong case for: where you take your body, your brain is going to follow. He mentions Alzheimer's often.

I just finished reading "Grain Brain" (as a follow up to "Wheat Belly" a couple yrs ago. GF aside, both books are - or should be - a wake up call. We're eating ourselves ill. So much so we don't even realize it.

I have been grain free for 6 months. 25 pounds down and within 4 pounds of dropping below 25 BMI. (55 yr old male) I am convinced that the best way to "eat less" is eliminate all grains. Within three weeks I lost all cravings for carbs. I can walk into a Starbucks at the airport and not even look at the pastries. The breadbasket before dinner at the restaurant invokes a meh response. It takes about three weeks to get over what feels like a carb addiction. Read the first chapter of Wheat Belly for inspiration. Read Grain Brain next.

Now that I think about it a little more, that general idea fits into Scott's framework of the how the constraints of cultivation, specifically that what we cultivate domesticates us in turn.

Specifically grain being so calorie dense and pleasurable that we end up becoming beholden to its growth, with significant cost. Look at all the ideas permeating these days about dangers of high carb diets, this book [1] suggesting they make us stupid for example. Or about the link between metabolic disfunction and mental disorders [2]

Biology is all about survival and multiplying the species. Seeds are plants babies, the biological response is to make your babies aren't eaten! I think there's a book about this, probably Grain Brain, but I 'm not sure.
