    Something Deeply Hidden

    Sean M. Carroll · 2019

As you read these words, copies of you are being created. Sean Carroll, theoretical physicist and one of this world’s most celebrated writers on science, rewrites the history of 20th century physics. Already hailed as a masterpiece, Something Deeply Hidden shows for the first time that facing up to the essential puzzle of quantum mechanics utterly transforms how we think about space and time. His reconciling of quantum mechanics with Einstein’s theory of relativity changes, well, everything. Most physicists haven’t even recognized the uncomfortable truth: physics has been in crisis since 1927. Quantum mechanics has always had obvious gaps—which have come to be simply ignored. Science popularizers keep telling us how weird it is, how impossible it is to understand. Academics discourage students from working on the "dead end" of quantum foundations. Putting his professional reputation on the line with this audacious yet entirely reasonable book, Carroll says that the crisis can now come to an end. We just have to accept that there is more than one of us in the universe. There are many, many Sean Carrolls. Many of every one of us. Copies of you are generated thousands of times per second. The Many Worlds Theory of quantum behavior says that every time there is a quantum event, a world splits off with everything in it the same, except in that other world the quantum event didn't happen.

I love Sean Carroll (Something Deeply Hidden and From Eternity to Here are the root of my fascination with physics and endless pondering of the nature of time) but I have to disagree with his take on this.

Hypothesis - a proposed explanation for something (such as a phenomenon of unknown cause) that is tentatively assumed in order to test whether it agrees with facts that are known or can be determined.

Theory - a scientifically acceptable or plausible general principle or body of principles based on data and offered to explain phenomena

Just because those outside of scientific fields use them interchangeably doesn't change the fact that they carry different meanings in scientific contexts.

Sean Carroll (professor of physics, quoted in the article) has a highly-rated book titled "Something Deeply Hidden: Quantum Worlds and the Emergence of Spacetime" [1] which discusses exactly these topics. I haven't read it, but it's on my list.

I also highly recommend his podcast "Mindscape" where he discusses this and a range of other topics in science and philosophy. [2]

As an interested amateur, I recommend the book "Something Deeply Hidden: Quantum Worlds and the Emergence of Spacetime" by Sean Carroll as a good overview of quantum fundamentals. The book discusses several interpretations of the reality of matter at the quantum level. Dr. Carroll himself believes that everything is waves/fields at the lowest level, and a many-worlds interpretation of why matter appears to be particles when we observe it, but also discusses de Broglie–Bohm pilot wave theory and spontaneous collapse theory.

Something Deeply Hidden by Sean Carroll came out recently and fits what you're describing. While I enjoyed it a lot of it went over my head so I may not be the best guide here.

He also has a podcast that's pretty good called Mindscape.
