    Tales from the Loop

    Simon Stålenhag · 2015

Simon Stålenhag's Tales from the Loop is a wildly successful crowd-funded project that takes viewers on a surprising sci-fi journey through various country and city landscapes--from small towns in Sweden and the deserts of Nevada to the bitter chill of Siberia--where children explore and engage with abandoned robots, vehicles, and machinery large and small, while dinosaurs and other creatures wander our roads and fields. Stålenhag's paintings and stories take place in an alternate version of Sweden in the '80s and '90s, primarily in the countryside of Mälaröarna, a string of islands just west of Stockholm, and how this reality came about: the development of the Loop, a large particle accelerator and the side effects of the massive project. These incredibly captivating works and accompanying text capture perhaps a not-too-distant reality that is both haunting and imminent: addressing the many ways developing technology and nature can create havoc and wonder in our world--plus, its impact on the next generation. This is the English edition of the first book in Swedish that sold out in its initial printing.

Simon Stalenhag, Tales from the loop and following. Sweden. High tech, AI, robotics, goo, etc spill into and leave debris all over the "real world". The real world both works on these projects and randomly "encounters" the spillouts.

Agreed on Tales from the Loop. I don't think anyone I know has seen this, as it's not very flashy and it's relegated to Amazon Prime video. But I enjoyed it and encourage others who like the "Living with the technology genre"

I've done a lot of improv with different TTRPGs. As long as the rules are simple and the focus is on the narrative rather than wargaming it's a perfect way to explore improv. My last group focused a lot on exploring relations between characters and NPCs and dug into the personalities of the characters. It's doable with most systems. Give the characters goals, beliefs, fears and motivations and dig into that. You get a totally different game. Really want to recommend Tales from the loop and running that with a lot of improv.

I'm in the process of building a virtual tabletop, www.fictionboard.com, that focuses on narrative driven games. I find other VTTs get more in the way and just doing games on Zoom or Discord doesn't provide enough tools for immersion.

How about Tales from the Loop? The characters in the game are 10-15 years old, which is to 7-8 yo ones just as fantastical as playing Elves or Klingons to us adults.
