    Learning the art of electronics

    Thomas C. Hayes · 2016

This introduction to circuit design is unusual in several respects. First, it offers not just explanations, but a full course. Each of the twenty-five sessions begins with a discussion of a particular sort of circuit followed by the chance to try it out and see how it actually behaves. Accordingly, students understand the circuit's operation in a way that is deeper and much more satisfying than the manipulation of formulas. Second, it describes circuits that more traditional engineering introductions would postpone: on the third day, we build a radio receiver; on the fifth day, we build an operational amplifier from an array of transistors. The digital half of the course centers on applying microcontrollers, but gives exposure to Verilog, a powerful Hardware Description Language. Third, it proceeds at a rapid pace but requires no prior knowledge of electronics. Students gain intuitive understanding through immersion in good circuit design.

Try pairing it with the companion "Learning the Art of Electronics." It's a hands-on lab workbook that complements the main book. It's very practical.

Or better yet, the "Learning the Learning the Art of Electronics" which breaks down the companion book.

I took a class where we used Learning the Art of Electronics (with AoE as a reference), and that book was also excellent. Class was taught by a former student of Horowitz and Hill, and one week the OG did the guest lecture! Unforgettable.

The books Make: Electronics and Learning The Art of Electronics are pretty good hands on resources.

The Art of Electronics is a wonderful book and you can certainly learn from it. I don't think it's useful as a reference, but it is a little opaque to someone new.

But, now there is https://learningtheartofelectronics.com/ Learning the Art of Electronics, which is a practical course with labs to complete, etc. It is very, very good. I am using subsets of it (with scaffolding/additional practice) to teach smart middle schoolers to design transistor circuits implementing amplifiers, oscillators, and logic gates.

I have TAoE (but probably 2nd Ed, as I’ve had it for some years) and it is both educational and very dense.

That said, I bought “Learning the Art of Electronics: A Hands-On Lab Course” and really like it. There’s a good bit of practical, accessible knowledge there. Imho worth checking out for anyone who likes the idea of TAoE but finds it just a bit deep.

FWIW, my formal education is CS with a dose of digital electronics thrown in. For anything analog, I’ll try and find existing circuits close to what I need.
