    The body economic

    David Stuckler · 2013

Two public health researchers prove that the recent economic crises around the world have had calamitous effects on people's health, citing increases in suicide rates, HIV transmissions, and heart disease during times of bad fiscal policy.

    What Hacker News says

    1. MrDresdenApr 2024
I wasn't saying that corporations are required to hire and then keep their hires on staff. I was talking about the societal impact of the possibility that corporations would lay off large chunks of their employees, during a climate where no work was to be had due to technology taking over most of those jobs.

Being fired and being unable to find employment elsewhere often has serious financial, physical and mental consequences for people. Often times it can completely ruin a persons life.

Not everyone has savings, or even the possibility to create savings, making the impact of being made redundant even that much more harder to handle.

Severe life changing situations can often lead to drug and substance abuse which carry with them higher chance of death. These situations can often directly lead to suicide.

Not every society around the world has systems in place to capture those that fall down, and even those that do are going to have a difficult time handling the large influx of people needing assistance if the techno dystopian future in the article comes to pass.

I would recommend checking out the excellent book "The Body Economic: Why Austerity Kills by David Stuckler & Sanjay Basu" on the societal impact of austerity.

David Stuckler & Sanjay Basu - The Body Economic: Why Austerity Kills - Recessions, Budget Battles, and The Politics of Life and Death

In it they look at the results that austerity measures had on societies around the western world following the aftermath of the 2007/2008 financial crisis, as well as comparing those results with those had in nations where social systems where protected instead.

Effectively it was one big natural experiment, and I can not wait to see what they write up about the ongoing crisis in a few years time.

Austerity literally kills, and often leads to neoliberalism. “The Body Economic: Why Austerity Kills” by David Stuckler MPH PhD and Sanjay Basu MD PhD is an excellent read on the subject.

The British, in no exaggeration, get taxed to death. You get horrible value for your tax dollar. I am saying this as an American who lives in Croatia, who pays quite a bit in taxes. However, I prefer to pay Croatian taxes (in addition to my US taxes) as a dual US|EU (Croatian) citizen, just for a stable, relaxed society.

There is a very high baseline level of stress and anxiety living in America. It’s not worth living there again. Seriously, Croatians have a great lifestyle, with perhaps the best lifestyle in all of Europe. Also, if you die of coronavirus in America, it is nothing more than a statistic to both the government and the American population, which is not only unbelievably disgusting, but downright sadistic.
