    The Broken Road

    Patrick Leigh Fermor · 2013

"In the winter of 1933 eighteen-year-old Patrick ('Paddy') Leigh Fermor set out to walk across Europe, starting in Holland and ending in Constantinople, a trip that took him the better part of a year. Decades later, when he was well over fifty, Leigh Fermor told the story of that life-changing journey in A time of gifts and Between the woods and the water... The broken road is the long and avidly awaited account of the final leg of his youthful adventure that Leigh Fermor promised but was unable to finish before his death in 2011, assembled from Leigh Fermor's manuscripts by his prize-winning biographer Artemis Cooper and the travel writer Colin Thubron"

    What Hacker News says

At the end of the book The Broken Road [1], the great adventurer and writer Patrick Leigh Fermor writes about his stay on Mount Athos. This followed his 1930's journey, almost entirely on foot, from Holland down the Rhine and then along the Danube to Istanbul. The book and the two others about his trip are some of my all-time favorite bedtime reading.

There's more on Mount Athos on a website devoted to Fermor: [2]

Patrick Leigh Fermor recounting walking from Holland to Constantinople in the early 1930's is an enchanting tale. He was in his teens when he started the walk, but only started writing the travelogue when he was in his sixties. He was a fascinating and erudite character. The three books in the series are:

A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, The Broken Road (unfinished)

Fiction - Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse. Contrasting the lives of a free spirit and a disciplined mind.

Non Fiction - A Time of Gifts/Between the Woods and the Water/The Broken Road by Patrick Leigh Fermor. Recounting a trip from Holland to Constantinople by foot in the 1930's when he was a teenager. A trilogy of books written when he was in his 60's and 70's. An erudite raconteur.
