    The Broken Earth Trilogy

    N. K. Jemisin · 2018

This collectable boxed set edition includes all three books in N. K. Jemisin's incredible NYT bestselling and three-time Hugo award-winning Broken Earth Trilogy. This complete collection would be a great gift for any occasion and includes The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky. This is the way the world ends for the last time... A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy. I had a similar experience -- I did enjoy it, and some parts genuinely moved me, but the last quarter or so was a bit of a slog.

I will say that I enjoyed her short stories a lot more! They are fairly deep but entertaining, with great twists and surprises

The Wind's Twelve Quarters is a good anthology -- in that one, I liked The Rule of Names, Semley's Necklace and The Word of Unbinding. In another anthology (I think), Direction of the Road -- phenomenal. Most of these can be found standalone online

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas I enjoyed less, but it's a short read and fairly important culturally. NK Jemisin, who wrote the Broken Earth trilogy (highly recommend it), wrote a sort of tongue-in-cheek short-story in response to it called The Ones Who Stay and Fight -- also worth reading.

In case anyone else is thinking about picking up the Broken Earth trilogy, I'll offer another opinion. The Fifth Season still stands out to me as one of the best sff novels I've read in many years and I recommend it wholeheartedly. I remember feeling sorry for authors who had novels published the same year, because The Fifth Season was so obviously going to sweep the awards (on merit). Had a similar reaction to R F Kuang's Babel, but different outcome there, obviously.

IMO The Broken Earth trilogy winning the Hugos is the best argument against the claim that Hugos are politicized. The books are a SFF must read.

The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin

Extremely well done series that straddles the sci-fi fantasy line. There's a reason Jemisin became the first person to win the Hugo three years running for three books of a series.
