New rules for the new economy

    Kevin Kelly · 1998

A spirited and groundbreaking book in the tradition of such futuristic bestsellers as Megatrends, The Year 2000, and Future ShockForget supply and demand. Forget computers. The old rules are broken. Today, communication, not computation, drives change. We are rushing into a world where connectivity is everything, and where old business know-how means nothing. In this new economic order, success flows primarily from understanding networks, and networks have their own rules. In New Rules for the New Economy, Kelly presents ten fundamental principles of the connected economy that invert the traditional wisdom of the industrial world.Succinct and memorable, New Rules explains why these powerful laws are already hardwired into the new economy, and how they play out in all kinds of business--both low and high tech--all over the world. More than an overview of new economic principles, it prescribes clear and specific strategies for success in the network economy. For any worker, CEO, or middle manager, New Rules is the survival kit for the new economy.

    What Hacker News says

I'm really getting tired of people continually bashing Kevin Kelly. Kelly's book, New rules for the new economy, was what gave me the final push to quit my job and become a software entrepreneur. But he got few things wrong in that book and the criticism was so harsh he stopped writing books for a few years.

Kelly is a cheerleader. But he ties disparate threads together and gives you a mental model where he sees the future going. He's been far more right than wrong. But some people I guess are natural born pessimists.

George Gilder has a similar approach. Kelly wrote in Wired in a famous essay after the 2000 crash that the Internet was at the beginning of a 200 year boom and I believe that to be true.

Kevin Kelly's New Rules for the New Economy. I gave away probably twenty copies to my friends to explain why I left one career to do a startup.

Course that book and Kevin Kelly post bubble were roundly criticized. But looking back he got most of it right. Sadly he stopped writing for quite a few years. That book motivated me that I was doing the right thing. That startup failed, but the next one didn't.

A mostly current reading list: (inspired by Josh Fraser's post http://www.onlineaspect.com/2010/07/23/my-3-rules-about-reading/#idc-container)

I've been giving away books for years, awesome habit! I finally got rid of all my old gaming books (hundreds) and their in the trunk of my car now ready to be dropped off at a nearby gaming store. Almost every technical book, algorithmic book, or fun book that comes my way gets stashed on my kindle ebook account, a pdf on dropbox, or now iOS apps.

Favorite trends/futurist tech book: Kevin Kelly's New Rules for the New Economy, preorded his next book created from the Technium, What Technology Wants

All time favorite fantasy book: The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazney (I read the series separately then got this awesome compilation of both series).

The books I'm actively reading or have read recently. My backlog is growing much faster than I can read them (some of the books on my list): Design Patterns in Ruby

      CouchDB the definitive guide

      Javascript the good parts

Seth Godin's work, idea Virus, everyone is an expert, Tribes, Zen Unicorn,

      Four Steps to Epiphany

      The Search

      Don't Make me Think

Fun stuff that I read and affected who I am over the past few years: Awakening The Buddha Within

      The Art of happiness

      Peace in Every Step

      How to Get Rich

Other fun fiction books: Pandora's star and the sequel

      Ender's Game + 1 sequel

The Dark tower series (didn't finish)

The Wheel of Time (didn't finish, stopped book before last)

Stuff I haven't read yet but purchased/downloaded (in the queue): Viral Loop

      Getting Real

      The innovators dilemma

      The Age of Spiritual machines

      Cognitive surplus

I live in the future, here's how it works

      BhagavadGita

The Rails Way (great reference), Why's Poignant Guide, The book of ruby

      Beginning Scala, Scala By Example

Byte of Python, Think Python, Dive into Python, Learn Python the Hardway (can you tell I'd love a chance to learn more about python programming)

older stuff ( I blame wikipedia for getting me going on these):

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs

      The Critique of Practical Reason

      Politics: a treatise on government

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the wealth of nations

How to make friends and influence people

The only book I've released/written (based on my first few months blogging last year) 3 Steps to Satisfaction http://www.victusspiritus.com/2009/05/29/my-first-ebook/

Hopefully soon to be released, a future fantasy rpg I coauthored primarily with one friend with input from another. My coauthor is finishing the final editing while I work in a shrinking industry (systems engineer), push forward with a startup (go web apps!) and look for potential positions at active startups (love meeting people that dream big). And sometimes you find little gems, too!

I have a copy of "New Rules for the New Economy" by Kevin Kelly, signed as part of the Global Business Network that he and Steward Brand founded a long time ago.

Having read Fred Turner's immensely great book "From Counterculture to Cyberculture", that is a valuable little piece of history to me.

This KK (Kevin Kelley) guy seems super cool. I just browsed the rest of the site. Turns out he wrote that "New Rules For The New Economy" book back in the 90s. Pretty much every post on The Technium that I've read has been insightful. He's even got a section of the site just dedicated to showcasing how people "reappropriate" i.e. actually use technology: https://kk.org/streetuse/
