Most of what I read is related to startups or economics, but for the short list of change-my-life books:

This year I read a lot about what you might loosely call the Paleo movement / anti-carbs and sugar movement. The New Evolution Diet, The Primal Blueprint, books by Gary Taubes, and so on. I think this is going to change how I eat and exercise forever.

The Gift of Imperfection and other works by Brené Brown. Lately this is being promoted by Oprah, which isn't usually a good sign. I think it stands apart because it's not theory or poetry; it's based on some solid research on what people living more productive and satisfying lives are actually doing. If nothing else, her books have made me a better friend when my friends are in pain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw

You, and everyone with diabetes, should seriously read the first chapter of this book [1]. The author discovered he could treat his wife and son's diabetes with a major diet change, by eliminating all foods that cause a blood sugar (and resulting insulin) spike - sugar, HFCS, grains, most processed food, etc.

His assertion is that he current method of treating diabetes is based on classical mechanics, 1-in-1-out, etc., where you measure your blood sugar and try to manually maintain it at a certain level with sugar and insulin.

      But ...

      1) the human body is a complex, non-linear, dynamic system. It is based on and responds to signalling, genetic triggers, etc., and ...

      2) you don't need to micromanage your body, it will take care of itself as long as you don't essentially poison it.

      3) the old method presumes there is something wrong with your body, when in actuality, the problem is with the way your body reacts to 'modern' (post-agricultural) foods. Diabetes is a symptom of that, so cut those foods out, and diabetes goes away.

It may not apply to all types of diabetes, IANAE, but seriously, stop by a bookstore and spend 20m reading just the first chapter (maybe 2, can't recall exactly), and figure out if it's something worth looking into further.

Yeah, shorter but burstier workouts. Eg, no more than 30 minutes in the gym, but don't rest between sets or exercises.

Just push it as hard as you can without risking injury for 20-30m, then quit. Do that with high scheduling variance (one week do it 4 times, the next week 1 time, etc. Variance, not routine, is key). Combine with long walks (to work if you're not too far away), bike riding, anything to reduce your sedentaryness.

This isn't a body-building or triathlete program, it's just a healthy one. Don't think of working out in terms of deterministic, 1:1, input=output. Rather think of it terms of signaling your body in ways that trigger certain gene expression that leads to a healthier metabolism.

      >I've never understood why so-called "paleo" dieters have to push this point so hard, which as far as I've ever read is pure speculation...

You're right that it's probably unneccessary to even mention that aspect, the salient point is to avoid foods that spike your glucose, and as a result your insulin. It just so happens that anthropologists realized that once you eliminate those foods from your diet, what you're left with is the exact diet of paleolithic era man.

      >Science" tells us to stop eating all wheat products! Sounds more like fanaticism.

Read the Intro and first chapter of Arthur De Vany's book, The New Evolution Diet. It explains the science.

John experimented with the Paleo Diet in the 2010's and did a book review of the "Paleo Diet" book by Loren Cordain. I emailed him and suggested he read a related book, "The New Evolution Diet" by Art De Vany. He immediately wrote back a friendly email and ended up reviewing that book as well. He mentioned in his email that he was only interested in the nutritional aspects of the Paleo Diet, as he had his weight control covered by his own system, the Hacker's Diet.

This is what Art De Vany and the New Evolution Diet preaches. Short, high intensity exercise.
