"Wired For Story" is a great book that discusses an alternative set of "Story Atoms" which can be combined to create unique, compelling stories.

Lisa Cron's book, _Wired for Story_, is aimed at fiction writers, but any type of writer can benefit from her book. She gives excellent cognitive-science-based reasons for each writing tip she gives.

I'm an editor/book project manager at a major computer book publishing company, and a former software tech writer. I recommend Lisa Cron's book to all my authors.

I also found Lisa Cron's book 'Wired for Story'[1] a great resource.

The thing that people who don't understand storytelling don't get is that formula are there with good reason. The important part is using the art side of telling a story to make it not FEEL formulaic, even as you use the formulas to ensure an experience that satisfies readers.

There's a great book on how people's brains react to story that I loved, and you might find interesting if the concepts in save the cat! were interesting to you, called Wired for Story by Lisa Cron.

There's actually a book on writing that came out somewhat recently that talks about this topic in great detail. Was an interesting read from a writer perspective as well as general thoughts on how storytelling impacts people.

If you're interested you can search for Wired for Story.

Wired for Story is a great book about the science of story. I think it applies to a lot more than writing.
