I know some tech people who are capable of absorbing difficult material, but who never read for pleasure (and that means especially fiction). I think dyslexia may play a part in it.

If reading is really a chore for you, try looking for movies with more literate scripts. Many good writers have written for film, and in most genres.

If reading itself is not the problem and you are just easily bored, don't try to start with "serious" literature, but look for anything that grabs your attention. Not all of these are to my taste, but they have been broadly popular: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Big Sleep (1939), The Color out of Space (1927) (short), The Hunt for Red October (1984), Hondo (1953), Get Shorty (1990).

Yes! I think you're right. That's a great connection, never thought of Annihilation in that way. "Color out of Space" is the first HPL story I ever read, and still one of my favorites.

His short story The Color Out of Space has an amazingly accurate depiction of the effect of nuclear fallout on the land. People in it go crazy and shun the valley, but I think it's a good way to see what he would have thought about that development.

I get what you're saying. The problem is that I cannot stand ironic (or otherwise) racists comments on 4chan, so reading it like that wouldn't be a saving grace for Lovecraft. I actually find 4chan more grating.

I appreciate Lovecraft, especially for the influence it had on other writers, on comics, tabletop and video games; and some of this stories are pretty good (e.g. The Color Out of Space, The Outsider). But it's really hard to swallow his racism and xenophobia, especially since as mentioned by others, it cannot simply be excused by saying he was "a man of his time". He was xenophobic even for his time.

This reminds me of horror fiction like Lovecraft's Color Out of Space[1] and Neill Blomkamp's short Zygote (2017)[2][3]
