   I thought Annihilation is more of a re-thinking of HP Lovecrafts story "The Colour out of Space". You should totally read it, it's fantastically creepy and clearly influenced the film.

   This reminds me of horror fiction like Lovecraft's Color Out of Space[1] and Neill Blomkamp's short Zygote (2017)[2][3]

   One of those books[1] that are really hard to translate to another medium. The movie tried, but somehow the book can give you a better approximation about the sense of smell.

   I thought he was referring to "A Colder War," which to me replicates perfectly the cold dread I felt when reading Lovecraft's stories about the Colour out of Space, Irem of the Pillars, et al---more so than any of the works by Lovecraft's other fans (including Derleth, whose work I didn't enjoy).
