    Visual language for designers

    Connie Malamed · 2009

Within every picture is a hidden language that conveys a message, whether it is intended or not. This language is based on the ways people perceive and process visual information. In a time of unprecedented competition for audience attention and with an increasing demand for complex graphics, Visual Language for Designers explains how to achieve quick and effective communications. It presents ways to design for the strengths of our innate mental capacities and to compensate for our cognitive limitations.

"The non-designer's design book" is really great, I learned a lot from it. It helps to know these things, even though I am a software developer and normally do little to no design work for my clients.

Currently I read "Visual Language for Designers" (-) which is also very interesting. It describes how our brain processes visual information and how you can use this to create better (easier to understand) designs.

I'm not sure I know exactly what you mean by web design. So lets start there.

      a. The look: the graphic design of the page.

      b. The interaction: Usability and UX

      c. Designing and coding with good software design principles.

      d. Some thing else?

I can point you to some good books for b. or c., however a. is the holy grail. I have never found a good book on web design from a graphic design perspective. That said Ill share with you what I would consider the closest I have found.
