For anyone interested in reading more about this, E.P. Thompson’s Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism is a really good read, especially if you follow his citations to Lewis Mumford and others. Although industrial capitalism has sort of faded in some parts of the world, the insights I think are as relevant as ever. The author mentions Mumford once, but the central thesis seems taken directly from Technics and Civilization:

      > The clock, not the steam-engine, is the key-machine of the modern industrial age... the clock, moreover, is a piece of power-machinery whose "product" is seconds and minutes: by it essential nature it dissociated time from human events and helped create the belief in an independent world of mathematically measurable sequences: the special world of science.

I remember enjoying E.P. Thompson's take on "Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism" in college. He has a lot of interesting commentary about how technology in the form of accurate timepieces played a role in our concept of labor. The article is here behind a paywall (https://www.jstor.org/stable/649749). Anyone with access to a search engine can likely find a free copy ;).

There's a really interesting article by the historian EP Thompson that talks a bit about pre-industrial work patterns called 'Time, Work Discipline and Industrial Capitalism'. He makes the point that before clocks and factories, work was usually seasonal and came in spurts of very hard work interspersed with idleness, and that this is also how a lot of artists work. Your description sounds similar!

I hadn't heard about Gresham's Law. Thanks a lot for that. And I definitely hadn't heard about Rotisserie:

      > The Rotisserie implements an innovative approach to online discussion that encourages measured, thoughtful discourse in a way that traditional threaded messaging systems cannot. In contrast to the completely asynchronous, broadcast-to-broadcast mode of existing threaded messaging systems, the Rotisserie adds structure to both the timing and the flow of the discussion.

Thanks for that too. That's exactly the communication platform I made/am making. For me there's also the "human" element as described in Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism [0]. Like how "human time" is not "modern life time," but we're still humans so wouldn't it be nice to have a space where we communicate in human time. But yes Gresham's Law... hmmm...
