Post Status is a news and community site for the WordPress ecosystem, covering Automattic, acquisitions, releases and WordPress politics.
HN links it for WordPress news, such as the Tumblr purchase, and commenters use it to explain that WordPress and Automattic are different things.
Can someone ELI5 this whole topic?
Is the crux of the issue that WPE website use to say things like:
"Start creating on WordPress today" or
"Power your creativity on the #1 platform for WordPress" Which might have implied that WPE was official Wordpress?

In comparison to other companies like Pressable that simply use marketing copy like:
"WordPress Hosting that Means Business" https://pressable.com
Though this is also confusing, because Automattic acquired majority equity stake in Pressable. So Pressable is Automattic.

There's so much happening with this story that I feel like I don't understand what the root issue is.
According to this article [1], you plan to move Tumblr's backend onto WordPress. Considering that Tumblr's infra stores over 1 trillion distinct product objects, this would be one of the most technically ambitious migrations in history. Can you share any thoughts of how it will be approached? Will you be pruning/purging old content or inactive users?

In my experience as a not-very-technical person who has worked with WordPress extensively and dabbled in static site generators, WordPress is an order of magnitude easier to deal with.

The news hit yesterday that WordPress has purchased Tumblr
WordPress != Automattic.
