Walmart's engineering team writes about its open-source projects and infrastructure, including React, Node, Clojure and data analytics.
HN commenters cite it for Electrode's React server-side rendering results, Clojure tooling, and Druid event analytics, and one jokes about the Node single-threading point.
> We don't need as many senior people and there is some aspect that is performance related.
I wasn't directly impacted by this, but from the few instances I've seen, the people being ousted seem to be those that had questioned tech. decisions. They were people who did badly during our review process.
For instance we have a brand new react server side rendering based platform. I think the performance of that framework is somewhere around 2 concurrent requests per virtual machine. And we're bragging about our performance chops publicly: https://medium.com/walmartlabs/using-electrode-to-improve-react-server-side-render-performance-by-up-to-70-e43f9494eb8b#.2raryap9b
Wal-Mart has many problems, I don't think too many experienced engineers is one of them.
>Does this mean that a web server written in node is running single-threaded?
Yes, which leads to hilarious things like: https://medium.com/walmartlabs/using-electrode-to-improve-react-server-side-render-performance-by-up-to-70-e43f9494eb8b
"In our tests, however, we found that React’s renderToString() takes quite a while to execute — and since renderToString() is synchronous, the server is blocked while it runs. Every server side render executes renderToString() to build the HTML that the application server will be sending to the browser."
"The average renderToString()call with this configuration took 153.80 ms."
Isn't Backbone the closest analogy to React, in that it tries to be modular enough to be as small/big as needed -- as opposed to a full MVC-ish framework like Angular and Ember?
Backbone is an elegant library but I think its popularity and ecosystem were on a decline even before Walmart -- which was one of the biggest corporate contributors (e.g. Thorax [0]) -- did a complete overhaul in 2016 to React [1]

Yup, ClojureScript with re-frame is literally about half the code of the equivalent React and Js https://medium.com/walmartlabs/performance-monitoring-with-riemann-and-clojure-eafc07fcd375
