Excerpts from Nick Breeze's 2012 interview with researcher Natalia Shakhova about methane release from the East Siberian Arctic Shelf. She discusses the risk of abrupt methane emissions.

HN cites it in methane and permafrost threads as an early warning that still looks relevant.

It is true. In fact if you look at the source for that graph [1] you'll see it's a paper from 2009 and they used old 2007 IPCC data for their models. The IPCC has not taken feedbacks into account until their sixth report of which the synthesis hasn't been published yet [2]. In 2009 feedbacks were still not well understood. In fact Natalia Shakhova didn't publish her seminal paper on methane in the Arctic until 2010. Here's an interview with her in 2013: this video [1] [LINK] [2] [LINK]

    2. @NiceWayToDoITAug 2021· in “Climate change: Curbing methane emissions will 'buy us time'”

Let say we succeed to stop methane leakage from cows (algae feed, etc.) and also leakage from coal, oil and gas extraction. How are we going to stop Siberian permafrost melting (it has huge amounts of methane ice) it has potentially 100 to 1000Gt (currently 5Gt in atmosphere CH4) which is enough to tip the temperature to 2-3C? [LINK] [LINK] This is from 8 years ago but it is very relevant today: this video

    3. @pier25Apr 2023· in “Methane may not warm the Earth quite as much as previously thought”

      > Scientists fear that as warming triggers thaw of permafrost in the Arctic regions, this could also lead to increased methane emissions Could? This is already happening. Scientists such as Natalia Shakhova have been studying this for years. This is a video of her from 10 years ago. this video

In case your line is not sarcasm, we knew about it long time ago. This was warning 7 years ago: this video Current amount of methane in atmosphere approximately 5Gt, methane stored in permafrost amounts from 100 - 1000 Gt ... which if it melts means Game Over with instant K.O.
