A short excerpt from a 1994 interview of Steve Jobs in which he says everything around us was made up by people no smarter than you, and that you can change and shape the world.

Quoted in threads on motivation, agency and regret as an encouraging reminder that the world can be changed.

    1. @keiferskiDec 2020· in “Things You're Allowed to Do”

This reminds me of an old video of Steve Jobs. His idea is simple, but it's really powerful. In short: the world is something you can change, not merely participate in. When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family life, have fun, save a little money. That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again. And the minute that you understand that you can poke life and actually something will, you know if you push in, something will pop out the other side, that you can change it, you can mold it. That’s maybe the most important thing. It’s to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just gonna live in it, versus embrace it, change it, improve it, make your mark upon it. I think that’s very important and however, you learn that, once you learn it, you’ll want to change life and make it better, cause it’s kind of messed up, in a lot of ways. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again. this video

Steve Job's book was very inspiring and motivational for me. The way he saw the world was very enlightening. Here's a video of what I thought was really profound for me: this video

    3. @bsldldJun 2020· in “Ask HN: I implemented the life I designed: perfect but I feel lost. What now?”

The best thing according to me is to see smile on other people's faces. Atleast on those people's faces who have lost all hope. If I was in your position, I would concentrate on two things. Doing something to provide free(or atleast affordable) best quality - education to everyone, especially under priviledged kids e.g. from poor families and orphans. - healthcare to poor people. Atleast do these two things and the world will be a far better place. Take a break from your comfortable life and go travel to places like asia, africa and south america and you will find your calling. Here is some advice from a well know person: this video Edit: typo

    4. @thiagoperesJan 2013· in “Ask HN: How do you stop regretting?”

1st - Change your username. 2nd - I'm positive that If you don't change your mind, the thing you'll regret the most in the coming years will be the way you're thinking right now. There's still a lot that can be done. Lots of people succeeded after their 30's.
