A six-minute sketch from That Mitchell and Webb Look in which a speaker argues you should never drink more than slightly less than two drinks, the mildly intoxicated sweet spot before drunken madness.

HN uses it as a joke reference in threads about alcohol, cannabis and the Ballmer Peak, not as a recommendation.

This is about a specific condition but it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone really. I remember when there was a huge push on reddit and everywhere to decriminalize and later legalize marijuana and I was a supporter of the movement and still support it but only as a liberty principle. After getting into smoking it regularly in college I had the chance to meet long time users and without exception all of them had cognitive issues. One day I was late for a party and everyone was high when I arrived and I realized that I simply can't stand them because everything they said was the lowest IQ stuff I ever heard and they were pretending that its creative. Quit the thing and never looked back. Stick to the alcohol and drink within the culture of it and you will be fine. It is bad for your body even at small quantities but at least you keep your mind intact and alcohol actually enhances the creativity by lowering your guard and not interfering with your intelligence. The culture part is important, binge drinking can be fun at college at times but the culture I'm referring is the culture where alcohol is being consumed socially together with some food or at event. Avoid drinking alone and other high risk activities associated with drinking. I keep reading about how alcohol consumption is dropping, pubs are closing and this makes me sad because I see how young people lock themselves into apartments and smoke weed all day. I don't believe that anything good comes out of it, no wonder the

    2. @mrtksnJun 2023· in “Brains on Drugs: How tinkering with consciousness became a societal sin”

Alcohol is an interesting beast, certainly bad for your physical health but IMHO it's invaluable for your mental health in small doses. I'm not exactly a drug expert, my experience is limited to a few substances but nothing ever comes close to alcohol. It melts away all the fake constraints(the limits and problems which you only imagine to have) that cause stress and break your flow. All this in moderation of course, being completely drunk doesn't help. I will be send to oblivion for this but the worst is the weed, it lowers your IQ so much that you think you are so creative for each dumb idea(and you can't have any ideas with depth in that state). Alcohol is not like that, up until a point your mental capabilities(not the reflexes) are intact. There's this great sketch about being slightly drunk: this video And this XKCD: [LINK]

    3. @MordisquitosJan 2022· in “Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review”

      > Another thing that I have learned is that alcohol is an upper at low quantities (1 to 2 standard glasses of beer), it gets your heart rate up, etc. It is a downer at larger quantities (e.g. drunk people at 10 standard glasses of beer). If you don't drink much alcohol, then you are most likely experiencing it as an upper, it doesn't continue that way. > I like to drink 1 to 2 glasses as well because of what you said, but also because it's an upper. This part of your comment reminded me of a very relevant and topical sketch from That Mitchell & Webb Look : this video

Of course the finding from this paper of the optimality of slightly less than two drinks has long been known to certain elite segments of society[0]. [0] this video
