The 8-Bit Guy reviews the Color Maximite 2, a modern ARM-based computer that boots straight into BASIC. He shows what it can do as a retro-style machine.

It is cited as a review of a new boot-to-BASIC computer, and one commenter suggests it for a kid starting to program.

Not sure you are aware but there is a modern single board computer you can buy or build that boots to MMBasic which is a modern elegant and performant Basic heavily inspired by various Microsoft Basics. The computer is called Colour Maximite 2 and has a small but devoted community that’s constantly improving the platform. You can purchase CMM2 from a handful of vendors or make your own. I highly recommend one for a kid that is starting to dabble with programming. Kind of a homepage: [LINK] 8 bit guy review: this video

I'm not vouching for anything in particular, but there are "8 bit"-type machines running BASIC which are very accessible like this. Here's one which the 8 Bit Guy reviewed recently (it's actually a 32 bit ARM part): this video I have the Gigatron which is a bit similar but you have to solder it together.

The colour Maximite [1] is a good approximation to this for the modern era. Arm Cortex M7 at 480MHz so quite powerful but not many abstraction layers between user code and the hardware. More coverage here from the 8-bit guy here. [2] [1] [LINK] [2] this video
