Technology Connections explains how refrigerator and freezer design affects energy use, using chest freezers to show why top-opening designs and layout choices matter. It includes thermal-camera footage of cold air spilling out of upright units.
HN points to it whenever chest fridges or freezer efficiency come up, as a clear explanation of design trade-offs between efficiency and convenience.

Technology Connections did a decent video that covers freezer design decisions like that and others: this video
Combined fridge/freezer units use a heat pump to get the freezer really cold and residual cold air is cycled into the fridge. So having the freezer on bottom is not the optimal design, maybe because cold air is dense and will fall taking more active effort to distribute it. Source: this video
I should bring up that top opening chest fridges are actually pretty great for energy efficiency! this video The amount of electricity needed is so small that it might even be comparable (mobile so i haven't calculated yet)
This reminds me of the Technology Connections fridge rant video. Similar arguments all around, the dumping effect of cold out of a vertical fridge is pretty crazy to watch with a thermal camera. this video
Mostly yes. Upright fridge and freezer designs trade off efficiency for convenience (rooting around in a chest fridge/freezer can be annoying). this video
