Account of British Imperial Transatlantic Expedition, 1914-16, leader E.H. Shackleton, based on original diaries.
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a top 5 all time book for me.
│ When he saw the three men he stepped back and a look of disbelief came over his face. For a long moment he stood shocked and silent before he spoke.
│
│ "Who the hell are you?" he said at last.
│
│ The man in the center stepped forward.
│
│ "My name is Shackleton," he replied in a quiet voice.
│
│ Again there was silence. Some said that Sørlle turned away and wept.
One of his last discovered ships being entangled in fishing nets has an element of poetry to me. The few photos in the article are cute, too, in showing the ship being in an active marine environment.
'Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage' is a fantastic read.
Regarding the journey across Elephant Island, that too was incredible. I note that there are tour companies providing opportunities to do this, though I haven't managed to do it yet.
Read it, read it now.
It's the kind of book that you once you read, you'll never forget. 4.8 stars with 23k reviews on Amazon. Similar survival story vibes as books like "Into Thin Air" or "Into the Wild" but just on another level. It follows the story of a journey to Antarctica in 1914 that goes wrong and ends up with the ship trapped in ice for many months, and follows the crews absolutely insane attempts at survival.
I am waiting for time to forget enough of it so that I can read it again.
lots of great recommendations already, but this is a relatively quick read and a great story.
How To Build A Car
If you're into F1 -- or precision engineering -- it's a cool book that gives you insight into a fantastic designer and his approach to producing machines
I could go on but those are two books I thought about while going about my day today
* Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage - If you enjoy books about persistence in the face of adversity, this has it in spades. When I was in my 20's I saw the movie "Touching the Void" and remember being in total awe at a human's ability to persevere in seemingly impossible situations. Shackleton and his crew bring this power of determination to another level.
* On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft - Reading this gave me another level of respect for Stephen King. He also pointed me towards another excellent book "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life".
