I read The Manager's Path and I was not impressed. She has one chapter on mentoring and the advice is very vague and hard to put into action.

      Sources I would recommend:

Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams Tom DeMarco and Tim Lister

The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering Fred Brooks

Software Craftsmanship: The New Imperative Pete McBreen. Includes several sections on managing and mentoring software developers from apprentice through journeyman to mastery

"Death March", Yourdon. Doomed software projects - how to recognize and deal with them, and sometimes use them to your advantage.

"Software Craftsmanship", McBreen. Take pride in your work.

Anyone interested in what its really all about should read the book: http://www.amazon.com/Software-Craftsmanship-Imperative-Pete...

Uncle Bob seems to have hijacked the term to relabel XP after Scrum got all the Agile glory.

Or better yet, attend a conference or meetup.

I find the Craftsmanship crowd to be a much better overlap with the HN crowd than say what the Agile community has become.

This aligns with what Peter McBreen covered in "Software Craftsmanship: The New Imperative" [0] in 2001
