The most important job of an engineering manager is this one simple thing: TALK to your staff. The old book “The One Minute Manager” [1] (short and simple) I found to be good advice.

“… three techniques and of an effective manager: one minute goals, one minute praisings, and one minute reprimands.”

The key is to interact with staff often, not just once a month, and not always in a staff meeting. As a manager, people want to know you, to trust you, and to confide in you. They want your help, and you want them to be successful. Good luck!

There is a short book called something like "Leadership and the One Minute Manager" that talks about 4 different kinds (maturity levels) of reports, and the different treatment each needs, depending on their high or low levels of confidence and competence. (Maybe "the one minute manager" is good also; some recommend it but I haven't read it yet.)

And maybe the realization that everyone is in a different place, for different reasons (a different combination of experiences and choices made), so what helps or doesn't help them could vary.

(I've put some things about social development, including how to work with people, such as when trust matters, etc., at my web site, and have more content to add if interested. Simple; feedback welcome; nothing for sale.)

ps: I commented some about balancing positive/negative feedback, to maintain the working relationship in a way that they won't just start ignoring what one says: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29323685

When people know that you care about them as a human being first, it goes a long way toward ... everything.

I'll take a shot, assuming that you are asking how to manage a technology team, not how to understand technology at a wider scale. You need both tech leadership and end-to-end/shallow-deep abilities. But the tech side is a different question entirely. Looks like some other folks have provided answers so I won't go there. (The tech side is a lot to go into in a thread, and would include some kind of conversation figuring out where you are technically. "I'm a SWE" doesn't begin to cover it.)

      Without any thought at all:

      - One Minute Manager

      - Debugging the development process

      - The Culture Code

      - The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

      - Difficult Conversations

Take some negotiation and interviewing hands-on courses.

Thanks all for suggestions on this thread. I have another recommendation. As a designer, the book that helped me a lot is — The one minute manager [1]. It talks about setting one minute goals, one minute praises, and one minute redirects. As a person, who often has issues telling people to do things, I like the flowchart approach it takes.
