Also get a copy of the Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair from Park tools. A good reference before the Internet. There are other good books as well that cover specific parts - The Bicycle Wheel by Jobst Brandt is good too if you want to go really in depth on spoked wheels.

Another great resource for that is "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt. Oops. I guess it's out of print as copies on Amazon are going for $35 and up. My local library should have a copy as I managed to buy two and IIRC I donated one.

Not to take anything away from Sheldon Brown. I've spent plenty of time on his site. And of course Brown has a page about Brandt: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/

The Bicycle Wheel by Jobst Brandt is all I ever needed. I've built hundreds of wheels, I don't feel I need this tool. I guess if you're being really anal about it it's of value. I've used a spoke tensioner once ever, just a stand and a good feel for tension is fine. I've ridden over 60000km on my wheels, no problems.

If you're interested in wheels, check out The Bicycle Wheel by Jobst Brandt. If you're building wheels it's a must have.

      In short: yes.

Slightly longer version: Find a good bike shop to do it for you. The wheels on a bicycle are about the only truly challenging thing to work on (short of suspension components or the headset bearings that are pressed into the frame), and about the only things that you can irretrievably screw up. A shop that builds more than a couple wheels a year will probably do a better job than the average bike shop.

If you're curious about what building a wheel involves, a good resource is The Bicycle Wheel, by Jobst Brandt [0]. Mind you he still that the bottom spokes of a wheel are in compression (which is demonstrably false; see Mavic's linear pull spokes, which literally cannot be in compression or the wheel would fall apart). Sheldon Brown's website is useful too.

FWIW, if you're interested in this subject, the best reference is Jobst Brandt's "The Bicycle Wheel". It's been out for 30 years or so, but it's still the best reference.

Past that, you might want to look at Timeshenko and Geere's "Theory of Elastic Stability", but you'd need a good university library for that one.
