    Reversing

    Eldad Eilam · 2005

Beginning with a basic primer on reverse engineering-including computer internals, operating systems, and assembly language-and then discussing the various applications of reverse engineering, this book provides readers with practical, in-depth techniques for software reverse engineering. The book is broken into two parts, the first deals with security-related reverse engineering and the second explores the more practical aspects of reverse engineering. In addition, the author explains how to reverse engineer a third-party software library to improve interfacing and how to reverse engineer a competitor's software to build a better product. The first popular book to show how software reverse engineering can help defend against security threats, speed up development, and unlock the secrets of competitive products Helps developers plug security holes by demonstrating how hackers exploit reverse engineering techniques to crack copy-protectio...

I learned a lot of this stuff ~15 years ago from reading a book called Reversing: Secrets of Reverse Engineering by Eldad Eilam. The book is old but amazing. It takes you through a whole bunch of techniques and practical exercises. State of the art tooling has changed a bit since then, but the x86 ISA & assembly more generally hasn't changed much at all.

One of my biggest takeaways was learning about "crackmes" - which are small challenge binaries designed to be reverse engineered in order to learn the craft. They're kinda like practice locks in the lockpicking community. The book comes with a bunch on a CD-ROM from memory - but there's plenty more online if you go looking. Actually doing exercises like this is the way to learn.

You don't start trying to reverse engineer COD. You build up to it.

      This is the way.

Although some books greatly help in getting there, I learnt a lot from "Reversing: Secrets of Reverse Engineering" by Eldad Eilam (might be a bit dated now)

A book I'm surprised doesn't get more love, this book really helped pull together a lot of things I "knew" about computing at the time and how to approach knowing things from breaking them down more generally.

Start here. Start with the second one - 'From n00b to l33t: An Introduction to Reverse Engineering'.

"This workshop is a 1-2 hour introduction to what reverse engineering is. It assumes no knowledge of assembly and is done on paper worksheets rather than a computer setup for accessibility and to make the most efficient use of time."

It's by Maddie Stone, who's a Security Researcher at Google Project Zero.

She also has Android app reverse engineering

Reversing, Secrets of Reverse Engineering - by Eldad Eilam is a nice read. If you know how to reverse engineer something, you can really learn from anything.
