Oh, boy. The Fool is one of my favorite characters in fiction and poor, poor Fitz. I picked the original series up on a recommendation from a college friend. I went in thinking I was too old for a "YA Fantasy" book to make my heart ache. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Took me right back to bawling over Feist's Riftwar Saga as a young teen.

My vote would be for The Riftwar Saga by Raymond Feist.

Another series that would be basically a better version of LoTR would be The Belgariad and The Malloreon series from David Eddings. 10+ books worth of material from the two series.

Its not SciFi, but Magician by Raymond E Feist (the Riftwar saga) would make a great tv series, there are lots and lots of books.

Just finished: Ready Player One and The Riftwar Saga (both very enjoyable)

Reading: Predictably Irrational (more substance than most business books I've read)

The Riftwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist (Magician, Silverthorn, A Darkness at Sethanon), while not an officially licensed D&D tie-in, is based on a D&D campaign the author played in at UCSD in the 1970s.

I think the Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson is also based on an RPG campaign, which started out as D&D then switched to GURPS.

      Both are worth reading.

The books are set 500 years before the campaign IIRC. Midkemia Press put out several RPG supplements including several describing places in the Kingdom:

That's interesting, I couldn't imagine how you'd fit the breadth and depth of character abilities from the books into something like D&D.
