    Post office

    Charles Bukowski · 1974

Charles Bukowski’s classic roman à clef, Post Office, captures the despair, drudgery, and happy dissolution of his alter ego, Henry Chinaski, as he enters middle age. Post Office is an account of Bukowski alter-ego Henry Chinaski. It covers the period of Chinaski’s life from the mid-1950s to his resignation from the United States Postal Service in 1969, interrupted only by a brief hiatus during which he supported himself by gambling at horse races. “The Walt Whitman of Los Angeles.”—Joyce Carol Oates “He brought everybody down to earth, even the angels.”—Leonard Cohen, songwriter

Everyone should own at least one book of Bukowski poetry: in addition to computers he wrote about cats, going to the track, drinking and other things his life. I remember riding the train from Dresden to Prague and the person next to us was reading his novel Post Office which is a wonderful story of irresponsibility.

I was a young postal worker, temporarily flunked out of university, when I first read Bukowski. The Post Office of course. Aside from some postal technicalities it was less reflective of day to day in the postal world than Star Wars or Mission Impossible. I loved it and was hooked on his writing for life anyway.

As for comedy in books, I find Bukowski - Post Office to be quite hilarious at times.
