    Here Comes the Sun

    Bill McKibben · 2025

Capturing the distinct rhythms of Jamaican life and dialect, Nicole Dennis-Benn pens a tender hymn to a world hidden among pristine beaches and the wide expanse of turquoise seas. At an opulent resort in Montego Bay, Margot hustles to send her younger sister, Thandi, to school. Taught as a girl to trade her sexuality for survival, Margot is ruthlessly determined to shield Thandi from the same fate. When plans for a new hotel threaten their village, Margot sees not only an opportunity for her own financial independence but also perhaps a chance to admit a shocking secret: her forbidden love for another woman. As they face the impending destruction of their community, each woman fighting to balance the burdens she shoulders with the freedom she craves must confront long-hidden scars. From a much-heralded new writer, Here Comes the Sun offers a dramatic glimpse into a vibrant, passionate world most outsiders see simply as paradise.

I recently read, and recommend a book titled "Here Comes the Sun" by Bill McKibben. There's a passage where a calculation is made of the amount of minerals that have to be mined in order to build renewable energy to cover all current energy needs. This quantity is huge. However it is equivalent in mass to the amount of fossil fuels that are extracted every year. The major difference is that the equipment for renewable energy will last decades whereas the fossil fuels are burned and need to be dug up constantly, for ever.

The book Here Comes the Sun by Bill McKibben is a really great read on the changing economics of solar. It came out August 2025 so its fairly up to date too.

Based on the contents of your comment, I'd be surprised if this wasn't on your radar but it's a very informative and thought provoking read: https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/27/here-comes-the-sun-king/

Going through "Here comes the sun" by Bill McKibben - slightly disappointed / surprised, as the book is very much a pamphlet / manifesto in favor of a single idea (that I could paraphrase as "solar is good, solar is _now_ cheap, it's so cheap that it's very cheap, and so good that's it's very good, and we should build more cause it's cheap and good, and if you disagree you're a fossil fuel shill astroturfer and all the land and materials problems are not really problems, and oh, did I mentionned it's cheap and good ?") To which I'll say, _fair enough_, but I was hoping for a slightly more nuanced view of the topic.

Also started "Sutskever's list" by Richard Heimann, which goes into the history of the current AI paradigm "one paper at a time". It's written for a curious audience : people who can vaguely understand the concepts, but not go into details. That means that I kinda "get" some chapters because I already read about the topics, and I'm completely stumped by some. But the "insider baseball" history is illuminating sometimes.
