    I Am a Bunny

    Ole Risom · 1963

I am a bunny. My name is Nicholas. I live in a hollow tree. This classic Golden Book, illustrated by Richard Scarry, celebrates its 50th anniversary with the story of Nicholas, a bunny clad in red overalls. In the spring, he picks flowers, and in the summer, watches the frogs in the pond. In the fall, he sees the animals getting ready for winter. And when winter comes, he watches the snow falling from the sky...then curls up in his hollow tree to dream about Spring. No child's library is complete without this gentle story of the seasons.

Cars and Trucks and Things That Go is a child favorite and What Do People Do All Day has great depictions of saw mills, flour mills, power plants, and more, but I like Richard Scarry’s I Am a Bunny the most: The pages are filled edge-to-edge with his vibrant illustrations (no whitespace as in his other books) and the story by Ole Risom describes the timeless passing of the seasons.

Seconded. I recently read I Am a Bunny to my toddler. I was totally blown away by the artwork. Every night I found myself hoping that she request it.

When I started in my career I was working as an ink and paint artist for a company making these types of games. It was all in macromedia director. We'd put the elements for everything everywhere and so much of the loading was collecting random small files from all over. It's where I made my first real application. This was kind of before flash and the web. I prefer the books now to the games but I loved what we were trying to do. Now the market is flooded with terrible edutainment software. I wish there was something you could see by the quality of illustration anymore and be able to say "hey this is quality" so much of it's trash. I was read I am a bunny as a kid. I now read it to my son.

Some books I’m willing to read repeatedly: I Am A Bunny, and I Am A Mouse, both by Ole Risom and illustrated by Richard Scarry and John P. Miller, respectively, in a realistic style, as if they actually made the time to observe the plants and animals; Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown; Stack the Cats, by Susan Ghahremani; and Bear and Wolf, by Daniel Salmieri. The latter is my favorite so far because of this line, among others:

“Bear and Wolf walked through the quietly falling snow, using their eyes, and ears, and noses to take in the snowy woods.”

Bear is female, Wolf is male, and they are at home in the cold, as we can be if we allow ourselves to acclimate. They explore together, go they separate ways, and meet again in late spring.
