      Meh...

      Wikipedia has it better and more comprehensive - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_cache

      For usage of caches from a OS, particularly in the context of multicores/multiprocessors see Curt Schimmel's classic Unix Systems for Modern Architectures: Symmetric Multiprocessing and Caching for Kernel Programmers.

      You might find Curt Schimmel's UNIX Systems for Modern Architectures: Symmetric Multiprocessing and Caching for Kernel Programmers useful.

      Authors deserves respect for keeping this book free.

      We were lucky to have a paperback low-cost-poorer-countries edition of The MINIX Book[1]. The code in the Minix book was an eye opener.The code clarifies the concept and sharpens the understanding.

      Later on in my career as driver/firmware programmer, Computer Systems - A Programmers Perspective[2] and Unix Systems for Modern Architectures[3] helped a lot to clarify confusions and mysteries.

      Good succinct tutorial. For people interested in studying Concurrency (Threading is just a subset of the model) i highly suggest the following book;

      Foundations of Multithreaded, Parallel, and Distributed Programming by Gregory Andrews.

      On the low-level OS/Hardware side (i.e. SMP/Caches etc.) UNIX Systems for Modern Architectures: Symmetric Multiprocessing and Caching for Kernel Programmers by Curt Schimmel is excellent.

      i know, this was a tongue-firmly-in-cheek kind of comment, but on the off by one chance that you are serious, look no further than: 'A Primer on Memory Consistency and Cache Coherence' (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1608455645/)

      and ofcourse, while you are at it, you might want to check out 'UNIX Systems for Modern Architectures: Symmetric Multiprocessing and Caching' as well, it also is pretty good, but with a broader focus (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0201633388)

      This is a thread after my own heart! I love finding out and reading old, less well-known and thought provoking books on a variety of subject matters. I have come to the conclusion that "popular" almost always equals "lowest common denominator" and "fad of the month" particularly given today's media hype cycles. Moreover one has to guard against having ones mental models bounded within a box. By actively seeking out lesser known and out of the way viewpoints one truly grows. Some books from my collection which i have not seen mentioned here (in no particular order or categorization);

      * The Natural History of Nonsense by Bergan Evans

      * Programming on Purpose, Essays on Software Design by P. J. Plauger

      * Management: A Political Activity by Ted Stephenson

      * The Energy of Life: The Science of What Makes Our Minds and Bodies Work by Guy Brown

      * Patterns for Time-Triggered Embedded Systems: Building Reliable Applications with the 8051 Family of Microcontrollers by Michael Pont.

      * UNIX Systems for Modern Architectures: Symmetric Multiprocessing and Caching for Kernel Programmers by Curt Schimmel.

      * Maxims and Reflections (Ricordi) by Francesco Guicciardini

      There are a bunch more i have to root around for :-)
