This is a three volume slipcased book collection of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips that where published from 1985-1995, it covers all the strips published and also reproduces many of the covers of earlier books in full page color illustrations. There are three daily black and white strips per page, and one color Sunday comic on a single page. Besides the comic strips there is also other full page color illustrations, and the poems and stories from other collections included. There is a new 'Introduction' by Bill Watterson. It originally sold for $150.00 in U.S.A., $200.00 in Canada, $265.00 in Australia, $295.00 in New Zealand, and £85.00 in U.K.
Dad: How's your math coming?
Calvin: I don't do math anymore. I decided I'm more of a "visual" person.
Dad: Good. Visualize being the only 45-year old in first grade. He also got the Complete Far Side and Bloom County as well. Both our teenagers have read them both.
It's funny hearing them know how Bill the Cat's brain was switched (?) into Donald Trumps brain. Ack-thpptt!
I only read them in the newspaper and in a couple of treasuries, but never completely, as our kids have.
What a remarkable blessing for them to be able to read those strips beginning-to-end.
I turn a page a day...
In the morning before I get coffee usually, though it's often too dark and I'll come back to read the two facing pages later. Depending on the day that means I'll read a Sunday strip and three daily strips or six daily strips. Once in a great while it's one Sunday strip and some custom art -- I presume from one of the books. Those days are a little disappointing but it's still one page turn a day.
I'm re-reading Calvin and Hobbes at somewhere around 5x original speed but somewhere about 50x slower than if I were to sit down with it and turn pages willy nilly. I've been doing it about six months and I'm still in the first book of the three that comprise the complete set.
It's a real added joy in my day and will be for some time. Some of the best money I've spent in a long long time.
I bought this when my son was around 7 and he absolutely devoured the books. He's older now but still goes back and reads them over again, giggling all the way. I love when he recites me his favorite strips, because they are all hilarious - usually involving interactions between Calvin and his dad.
I think Bill Watterson's comedy is completely on point and as relevant today as it was when he wrote the comics - providing insight into the interactions of family, school, and growing up while making you laugh. He's a comedic genius in my opinion.
