The Greatest Salesman in the World

    Og Mandino · 1968

The Greatest Salesman in the World is a book that serves as a guide to a philosophy of salesmanship, and success, telling the story of Hafid, a poor camel boy who achieves a life of abundance. If Mandino's suggested reading structure is followed, it would take about 10 months to read the book. What you are today is not important... for in this runaway bestseller you will learn how to change your life by applying the secrets you are about to discover in the ancient scrolls.

      I highly recommend two books:

Awareness by Tony Dmello and The greatest salesman in the world by Og Mandino

Some context: Last year was an awful year, lost my entire net worth and got super depressed- work lost its meaning and took sometime to recover- I wrote about it here: https://www.vice.com/en/article/bvnn3a/i-lost-dollar400000-a...

But a friend recommended both of those books and they helped me get back on track- PS. I am very much an atheist, so the recommendations might seem offtrack but both of the books carry remarkable advise.

The entire history of the human species is an inspiration and motivation, depending on what you choose to read into it. We are practically an infinite collection of case studies in creativity, innovation, perseverance, adaptability, beating the odds... your question is actually very hard to answer because so many great examples come to mind.

As for reading, a few things popped into my head in no particular order:

The Greatest Salesman in the World, by Og Mandino

      Emerson's Essays, particularly "Self Reliance"

Biographies of people like James Clerk Maxwell and Tesla

      If, by Kipling

      Any of Bucky Fuller's books

And really, just look around at what people are doing in our industry. Our peers are a constant source of inspiration. I see what some of my friends are doing the field of IoT and it makes me want to get up every day at 4am and hack until my fingers fall off.

I am going through what you describe right now.

Here is what I am doing:

      - brainwashing myself. I am reading positive books like Peaks and Valleys by Spencer Johnson and The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino. I didn't have the time so I made the time. Everyday.

      - I am reaching out to my family members and pushing away from work.

      - I am enjoying the sunshine and trying to laugh more. Both are free.

      - I have spoken to my accountant and the tax man about dealing with some of my debts. There are other debts I don't know how to deal with, so I don't worry about it.

      - I am learning a new language. It's another way to change my thinking. This post explains the idea behind it: http://dreaminespanol.com/spanish-lifehacks/eradicate-bad-me...

If you ever catch yourself hating life or yourself, you must stop. It's a downward spiral and completely toxic. Take corrective action now.

Start your life over again. You can. That's why we have a new day every 24 hours. Start over as many times as you need to to get it right.
