    Angela Saini · 2019

Superior: The Return of Race Science is a non-fiction book by Angela Saini published in 2019. Built around interviews with experts, the scientific consensus, and the author's analysis, it argues that some fields of biology are still influenced by the discredited scientific racism theories of the 19th century.

Thankfully I believe this is changing. Stephen Jay Gould is among the top cited authors within psychology despite not being a psychologist. The psychologists Gould criticized are slowly dying of (e.g. Arthur Jensen) or being fired in disgrace (e.g. Richard Lynn). A new generation of psychologist aren’t picking up their theories, and a new generation of policy makers are distancing them self from IQ science (e.g. the SAT was renamed for this purpose).

I think psychologists have spent enough ink on this non-sense and correctly moved on. It is now up to historians to talk about how damaging this theory truly was, and what the motivation was of policy makers that believed in this pseudo-science. Gould did a terrific job doing exactly that, and a more recent work of Angela Saini Superior: The Return of Race Science is another powerful account of this history, although she is not as optimistic about the state of affairs as I am.

I am raised catholic and go to church regularly. Universal human rights do not come from Christianity alone. If you take the tree example, let's make a mix of citrus, lemon, and orange. If you say it's just orange that's hiding the truth and makes citrus and lemon people understandable angry :) if you then say it's lemon-orange tradition, the citrus people get angry and the lemon people might feel alienated. Just saying. I recommend Nathan the Wise from Lessing for a read.

Holland was raised in the Christian church by his devout Anglican mother ... wikipedia Citation from Holland : "I am not Greek or Roman at all, but thoroughly and proudly Christian"

So he does not believe in God, yet he defines himself as Christian :) I said Christian author, no contradiction there.

I also recommend Superior from Angela Saini as a read.

You don't need God to believe in Universal Human Rights and Ethics. Seeing the recent abuse scandals, in the catholic church I find organized religion is a bigger problem ...

We disagree fundamentally. Still I appreciate that you take the time to reply. Something, I really like about hackernews :)

Also for me it didn't seem to work well. I entered "Bell Curve" by Richard J. Herrnstein, Charles Murray and "12 rules for life" by Peterson ... I would have expected something of the likes of "Superior: The Return of Race Science by Angela Saini" or "How to argue with a racist by Adam Rutherford" to pop up, as both of them present well reasoned arguments against the world view depicted in the previous ones. (Reading recommendation for both btw. ).

Yet, I got Go Forward with Faith: The Biography of Gordon B. Hinckley" and a lot of religious books. I can understand why this happens. Yet, a bit disappointing.

Even scientists who dispute the idea of a genetic basis for race agree that there are observable differences between races.

There are real ancestry differences across populations that correlate to the social constructions we have. We have to deal with that.

      — David Reich, quoted in Angela Saini, Superior: The Return to Race Science, (Chapter 7: Roots)
