"Why we get sick" by Benjamin Bikman. It talks about the causes and effects of insulin resistance, including how to diagnose it.

"The obesity code" by Jason Fung. It talks about the causes of obesity (spoiler: hyperinsulinemia) and provides practical advice on how how reducing carbohydrates and intermittent fasting can help.

"The case for keto" by Gary Taubes. Is an enjoyable read that not only covers the extensive evidence of how excess insulin leads to gaining body fat, but also how we ended up culturally terrified of dietary fat and dietary cholesterol.

If you have already managed to become lean through a low-carbohydrate diet and/or intermittent fasting, then I do recommend following the peer-reviewed research published by Nicholas Norwitz (he also has a YouTube channel for laypeople).

Ultimately, what leads me to this eating pattern is my own difficulty managing my body weight when I don't. If I could stay lean, healthy and satiated with a mixed diet that included some rice, bread, potatoes and pasta, I would go for it.

Many people do just fine with some carbohydrates in their diet. I used to as well, when I was younger. These days, I can either take significant steps to reduce my insulin levels or I slowly creep towards obesity and metabolic syndrome.

This is the punchline of every keto book. The whole ‘you just need to eat less calories to lose weight’ thing that has been pushed since post-WW2 despite having almost no solid evidence supporting it for long term weight loss.

The best one that destroys the woo-y history of calorie (and fat) obsessed health science (or lack of science) is the book “The Case for Keto” by the author who wrote “The Case Against Sugar” and “Good Calorie Bad Calorie”.

Agreed. Gary Taubes has written three high quality books on the subject. The most technical and heavily referenced are Why We Get Fat and The Case For Keto. The latter was just published.

I’ve been following a low glycemic diet for decades, but Taubes explains technically why it minimizes fat deposition.

If I start eating snacks like candy or corn chips, the weight gain is immediate and obvious. Not all calories are the same - some foods just “go to your hips”.

In my own experience I am 50 years old today. I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes / metabolic syndrome with an A1C of 5.7.-(borderline). weight was 189 pounds. 2 years ago. I started IF. Giving up breakfast then slowly giving up lunch and now eating OMAD ( one meal a day). your BODY WILL get used to eating less. IF worked for me. It seems the MAIN problem is NOT total calories, I read a book by Gary Taubes called "the case for keto." I don't know about bio chem but in the book he said it is not the calories you eat but rather the type of food / calorie. MAIN problem is simple carbs / Sugar. ( slow carbs are veggies) . Simple carbohydrates spike insulin and the harmone insulin is the problem it stores fat. Exercise will just make you hungry. I do exercise , i enjoy running in a fasted state 4-5 miles a way and i do bodyweight muscle building training too. I am no longer pre-diabetic and A1C is normal. But i still gotta keep an eye on it. I dropped weight and and getting used to the keto diet + IF. We have a family history of diabetes in my family. ( dad. brothers. ) all have it and they are on meds. Doctor do not tell you about diet they just put them on Metaformin. I am 2 years on IF and keto and it worked for me. I weigh 165 now. All my blood work is back to normal. Main problem are the simple carbs and frequency of eating. Look around you we live in a carb word / sugar ads everywhere. It is VERY VERY hard to stay away from simple / carbs / sugar but you can do it. Eating healthy is NOT CHEAP either. I do tell my family to try IF and or keto but they are addicted to carbs and are all on metaformin or some diabetic meds. - 2 cents
